Exfoliation of the skin of the face and body allows you to rid it of bacteria, of the impurities and dead cells.

In cosmetics,  l'exfoliation is the action of using an exfoliating ingredient on the most superficial layer of the skin of the face or body. It's here stratum corneum, which is the most on the surface of the epidermis, which is concerned by this type of care.

So, what are the benefits of l’exfoliation for the skin? What are the different types? How often should we do it? Why is it so important to impose a routine exfoliation from time to time ?

This article answers precisely these questions.

summary of the article

What is exfoliation?

In cosmetology, l’exfoliation aims to eliminate dead cells accumulated on the surface of the epidermis in order to make the complexion smoother and more luminous. It can be mechanical or chemical.

Exfoliation must be integrated into a beauty routine to stimulate the cell renewal and unify the radiance of the complexion. But to obtain visible and safe results, it is important to know in detail the different mechanisms of exfoliation.

The different types of exfoliation

Mechanical exfoliators

THE mechanical scrubs consist of small abrasive grains of natural or synthetic origin: sodium bicarbonate, crushed fruit pits, coffee grounds, salt, microbeads, sugar, etc. These grains act by rubbing on the skin and slough off dead cells. They are used in their pure state, or mixed with a cleansing gel.

Chemical exfoliants

THE chemical exfoliants are composed of molecules that act by attacking dead cells. Chemical exfoliation can be divided into two themes:

acid exfoliation

  • Acidic agents (often fruit acids) used depend on skin type and sensitivity:
  • Glycolic acid (AHA or Alpha Hydroxy Acid) is usually derived from beets, grapes or sugar cane. It is particularly suitable for mature skin and has an action on wrinkles, spots and firmness.
  • Salicylic acid (BHA or Beta Hydroxy Acid) is often derived from willow or meadowsweet; it can also be synthetic. It is ideal for skin with imperfections thanks to its anti-inflammatory and purifying action.
  • Lactic acid (AHA or Alpha Hydroxy Acid) is, as its name suggests, produced from the fermentation of milk. It can also be found in blueberries, sugar and beets. It is indicated for dull skin lacking radiance.

enzymatic exfoliation

THE enzyme exfoliator ingredients come mainly from fruit enzymes: papaya, pineapple, fig. They have an action very similar to fruit acids, and they are generally used in combination. They have the advantage of not being irritating or allergenic.

Exfoliation or peeling?

The term "scrub” is generally used to refer to mechanical exfoliation, whereas the word “peeling” commonly refers to chemical exfoliation.

Why exfoliate the skin?

The skin is made up of epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.

The epidermis is on the surface and aims to form a protective barrier thanks to the keratinocytes, which constantly renews itself. At the end of their life, they migrate to the surface and form a cluster of dead cells.

By exfoliating the skin, we help it evacuate them, which prevents the accumulation of blackheads and dead cells.

Exfoliating the skin therefore promotes renewal cellular by descaling the pores !

For the face, we generally prefer chemical peels or at grains very thin. Grangettes offers an enzymatic exfoliation to guarantee a non-irritating and respectful use of the skin but which guarantees optimal efficiency. For the body and less sensitive areas such as the soles of the feet, mechanical scrubbing can also be relevant.

Exfoliation for more radiant skin!

When you exfoliate your face or body, your skin texture is more even, smoother, and your skin regains its radiance. By making a regular exfoliation, you stimulate the cell regeneration but also blood circulation: the opportunity for your skin to regain all its suppleness and softness. A real beauty tip to integrate into your routine.

Exfoliation to prepare your skin

L’exfoliation allows prepare your skin by ridding her of dead skin before making a mask. But it also allows your treatment creams to better penetrate your face, so that they are as effective as possible!

Which exfoliation for which part of the body?

The type d’exfoliation to achieve depends mainly on the parts of the body you want to take care of. For sensitive areas like the vface, chest or even beard, we advise you to use very fine grains. For areas prone to friction or less sensitive areas like knees, elbows and heels, you can insist and use more large grains.

How often do you exfoliate?

We recognize that skin needs exfoliation when it is dry, rough, dull, or when more and more buttons appear. If you have normal skin, exfoliate it once a week, paying particular attention to harder areas like heels, elbows or knees. You will thus evacuate the dead skin, will bring out the hairs under the skin and restore your skin's radiance and beauty. If you have dry skin, exfoliate twice a month to give the skin time to heal. regenerate.

If your skin is sensible, take the time to monitor the reaction of your epidermis after exfoliation. If she can't stand it, reduce this treatment to once a month. For the face, do not grain scrub, often too aggressive: prefer chemical peels, based on fruit acids.

Grangettes et l’exfoliation

For exfoliation, Grangettes Switzerland only uses enzymatic active ingredients. They are more respectful of the skin, and allow precise targeting of problems: acne, imperfections, oily or dry skin, lack of radiance, etc.

Other exfoliation methods do not meet our specifications for several reasons:

Problems of mechanical exfoliation

Until 2018, microbeads were mainly made of plastic (polyethylene). They offered good efficiency at the expense of the environment. Fortunately, they are now banned in the European Union.

From now on, the micro-beads are designed with other eco-responsible materials but their effectiveness is reduced. Most of the time, their quantity is either too low or too high. As a result, the product is either insufficiently effective or problematic for the skin: irritations due to friction can create redness or skin reactions important.

Problems of acid exfoliation

Acid-based exfoliating active ingredients, particularly fruit, are very effective but highly allergenic. Since they can cause skin damage, they do not meet the safety standards of Grangettes Switzerland.
